Greenfed beef, poultry and dairy – Going Beyond Organic

Many of us may be used to hearing the term, “Grass Fed meat” – but Jordan Rubin has coined the term, Greenfed for the practices on his new ranch in Missouri.  Here is an article by Jordan Rubin from this month’s issue of Extraordinary Health Magazine:

Why Greenfed?

Increased omega-3’s are just one of many reasons you should make the decision to go with greenfed beef, poultry and dairy.  Studies have repeatedly and convincingly shown that greenfed livestock far outshine conventionally fed livestock.

To start, greenfed is a leaner option, with less fat and fewer calories.  Greenfed meat is also higher in an important fatty acid known as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). It is also higher in vitamin E and several B vitamins and the minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium.  Eggs from pastured chickens have been shown to have higher levels of vitamins A & D with less cholesterol than eggs from factory-farmed chickens. The list goes on and on.

And even if the health benefits were exactly equal, consider this: greenfed livestock are raised in a much more humane way. They are allowed to roam versus being pent up shoulder-to-shoulder in feedlots.  They are fed their natural diet, not grains that they were never meant to consume.  In 2008, the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences as the University of Wisconsin at Madison reported that several farms commonly used such “feed” as candy, pasta, leftover bread from bakery manufacturers and potato chips.

Why Greenfed, you ask, Why would you consider anything else?
