Most of you have already been inundated with information on cleansing programs and diet programs – all supporting the “New Year – New You!” I didn’t want to send you just another blog on the same. I want to help empower you to really make a difference in your health.

I have spent years working with clients, personally helping them discover the best nutritional or cleansing plans specific for their individual body. Since January 2011, I have worked with a local health food store assisting their customers in becoming educated on which supplements are best for them ~ not just purchase the latest fad. We have seen great results!

For the months of January and Feburary, I want to help each of you gain a clearer vision of how you can eat better, live better and feel better with a $25 discount off my Nutritional Consultation Services. Whether you are local or across the world, I can create a plan which will work best for you. http://palmbeachnutrition.com/session-rates/consultations

The local services for my consultations are usually $150 and the program via the mail is $125. The $25 discount can be applied to either of these services. http://palmbeachnutrition.com/sessions-rates/ Conctat me at 561-689-1070 or support1@palmbeachnutrition.com and mention this blog discount.

Living in South Florida, I find mold a common occurrence in homes, work and schools. So when Mercola.com released this article, it really made an impression on me.

I have personally worked with a family whose son was missing school due to allergy type reactions. His teacher was not helpful and pressuring the mother for allowing her son to “skip” school. The mother felt strongly that the portable school room in which her son attended class had a mold problem. I was able to suggest homeopathic remedies to help lessen the reactions and the mold in his system along with recommended the use of an excellent air purifier for his bedroom. At least at home, his breathing would be safe. An interesting note to this situation is that later in the school year, the teacher actually ended up in the hospital due to the mold in the classroom.

Here in an article found in Mercola.com, http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2011/07/30/dr-thrasher-on-the-health-dangers-of-mold.aspx?e_cid=20110730_DNL_art_1

I have included a portion of his info below:
Dr. Jack Thrasher has a PhD in cell biology from the UCLA School of Medicine, and is an expert on the impact of mold on human health. he discusses the health effects of toxic molds and bacteria, as well as his recommendations for remediation.

Jack Thrasher, PhD, is extremely knowledgeable on the topic of mold and how it impacts your health. Interestingly, from a toxicity point of view, some mycotoxins that molds produce are actually far more toxic than heavy metals, in terms of concentration. Mold mycotoxins also tend to affect more biological systems in your body than pesticides or heavy metals do.
According to Dr. Thrasher, the prevalence of mold in America is so great, he refers to it as pandemic. As many as 40 percent of all American schools and at least 25 percent or more of all homes are believed to be affected by mold and microbial growth due to water intrusion. A large portion of the problem stems from shoddy construction.

How to Detect a Mold Problem

Clearly, the first step would be to conduct a visual inspection. A musty, mildew odor is a tip-off that you need to check the area in question for any visible signs of mold. If you can’t see any visible traces of mold, Dr. Thrasher recommends taking an air sample, and using a moisture meter to determine the moisture level in the area.

“I use a moisture meter on every wall of the building or the home looking for hidden moisture. The moisture content of wood flooring, for example, should be no more than 10 to 12 percent. I’m finding floors that have moisture content of 48 percent. Exterior walls shouldn’t have anything more than 15 percent, and I’m finding exterior walls with 40, 50, 60 percent.

There are certain bacteria that do not release their spores into the air very regularly and you won’t find them in the air… So become educated as to what to look for and how to look for it, and don’t accept somebody coming in, taking an air sample and saying, “There is nothing wrong with this because the indoor counts are less than outdoor counts.” That’s wrong logic. Certain species of mold grow indoors much more regularly than they do outdoors. So you have to look at the species of mold, not just the spores.”

A better option is to do 24-hour monitoring. However, this type of testing cannot be performed by a typical mold inspector. You need to hire a high-level mold expert for this type of air testing. (I’ll list several sources for finding a qualified expert below.) Dr. Thrasher also suggests interviewing the expert in question to find out who they typically work for.

“If they’re doing work for insurance companies stay away from them,” he says. “You want somebody who is unbiased… [Also] ask them the question, “If you take the airborne mold in the indoor environment can it hurt you or cause toxic reaction?” If the person says, “No, don’t worry about it. All it can do is cause allergies,” then stay away from that person. That person is not well informed.”

After air sampling, Dr. Thrasher also takes swab and bulk samples of the mold growth; actually cutting out a piece of the affected area if necessary, for proper lab testing. Dr. Thrasher explains what he typically tests for:

“We culture for the bacteria. We culture for the mold. We do what we call ERMI (Environmental Relative Moldiness Index), which is an EPA test that was developed by a group in the EPA. This is a PCR-DNA analysis for 31 different species of mold… that is very inexpensive, relatively speaking. It costs $350 to do that test… [W]e take swab samples looking for endotoxins. We also look for… polysaccharides called 1,3-beta-D-glucans… We want to get a good idea what’s going on in the indoor environment.”

Next Step: Remediation

As soon as you’ve identified the problem, you have to stop the water intrusion and remediate the problem at its source.

“Let’s say you have an infested wall that’s in the middle of the home between the living room and say, the adjoining den; what is recommended is that the whole area must be walled off from the rest of the house… In other words, you drape them with a plastic and you have to tie the plastic down with masking tape so that that area will not, theoretically, contaminate the rest of the house,” Dr. Thrasher explains.

While you can clean affected metal objects, all organic materials (such as wood, particle board, and carpets) must be completely removed and replaced. You want to make sure that the contractor you hire for the job uses a HEPA (High Efficiency Particulate Arresting) filtration machine to trap minute particles, and that they’re meticulous when using it.

WARNING!! Be Careful How You Chose Your Remediator

There is no question that a high quality active air purifier can help control mold issues but it will NOT remediate against them. You can use the best air filters and purifiers and they will never solve the problem if you continue to have water intrusion into you home that increases the humidity and feeds the growth of the mold.

You will need to stop the water at its source and carefully remove and clean the mold infested materials. While this may superficially seem an easy task, let me assure you that it isn’t.

You need to find a qualified expert and professional that is certified by one of the agencies below. I would also suggest getting several bids for the work. You can find contractor or professional listings on the following sites. Both the IICRC and NORMI are certifying organizations for mold remediation, but the IICRC certification is perhaps the most widely used:

IICRC (Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification)

ACAC (American Council for Accredited Certification)—a certifying body that is third-party accredited.

The IAQA (Indoor Air Quality Association)—a membership organization with no certification program (the ACAC handles this by agreement)

RIA (Restoration Industry Association)

NORMI (National Organization of Remediators and Mold Inspectors)

Keep in mind that a mere certification or listing may not be enough. Also evaluate the remediator’s qualifications and insurance (liability as well as workman’s comp). With the ACAC, there are a few different levels.

How to Clean Up Minor Surface Mold

If you have just a small area of surface mold, you probably don’t have to call in an expert. However, only attempt to clean it if it’s limited to the surface of a small area. You cannot “clean” deep-rooted mold. Dr. Thrasher has one word for those of you who have bought into the home-remedy advice to “kill off mold” with ammonia or bleach: Don’t.

“What happens is you’ll kill the mold but you’ll leave the carcass behind,” Dr. Thrasher explains. “The carcass will disintegrate and release toxins into the air. So you really went from one problem (mold growth) to another problem; dead mold and the release of all of their toxins… and then once water is reintroduced in the environment, the mold will grow right back to the surface.”

However, for minor visible surface mold on say a baseboard, or on a piece of furniture, you could use a little bit of sodium bicarbonate (baking soda) and vinegar to wipe it off.

“I just use the concentrated vinegar and baking soda,” he says. “All you need is a couple of tablespoons [of baking soda] to a quart of water. The vinegar I just take straight out of the bottle… I generally do the vinegar first and then follow it with the baking soda… The vinegar will kill the mold and the bacteria but you’re going to leave residue on the surface and so you scrub the surface to try to get rid of the residue.

Air Purifiers – make sure you purchase the right one!

Thanks to recommendations by Jordan Rubin, my family depends on the technology of “Healthy Perceptions” and their Aclare Air zone Purification system – it is a must in my household. You can learn more at : http://healthyperceptions.com/

“As many of you know, for many years I worked with various physicians and was able to prove to them that mold caused significant health problems. Are you now seeing suspect diagnoses in your children like chronic sinusitis (documented as being mold induced in 95+% of cases), or bronchitis or asthma, all of which can be due to mold? We have three of these Aclare units in our home, and as health care workers begin to understand the mold link to serious diseases and learning disorders, I am certain that John and his family will sell out of these incredible units…” Doug Kaufmann , “Know the Cause”

“A healthy environment leads to a healthy life. Toxins in the air we breathe can have a negative impact on many systems of the body. To ensure the air I breathe is as healthy as possible, I use the Aclare Air Purifiers made by Healthy Perceptions. I have used these air purifiers in every room of my home for the last five years. I have often used the portable units in hotel rooms when I travel. The health of my family is a primary concern of mine and I trust the health of the air we breathe to Aclare Air Purifiers and you should to.” Jordan Rubin, CEO of Garden of Life & CEO of Beyond Organic

Could Your Health Problems be Related to Mold?

Common health problems that can be attributed to poor and potentially toxic indoor air quality include:

Frequent headaches
Depression
Neurological problems; poor concentration and forgetfulness
Joint aches and pains
Skin rashes
Muscle wasting
Chronic fatigue
Stomach & digestive problems, such as dysbiosis, leaky gut, and frequent diarrhea
Allergies
chronic sinusitis
Asthma or trouble breathing

It’s important to determine whether or not your health problems are indeed due to mold, in order to properly treat it. Most doctors will simply prescribe an antibiotic for chronic sinusitis, for example. But if your sinusitis stems from bacteria- and mold growth in your home, it’s not going to clear up.

This article is not to alarm but to educate – yes, these symptoms can be caused by several other health concerns.

During my consultations, I have helped to point many in the direction of researching mold in their lives due to the mold reactions that I find during the LSA Pro screening. I have also found that homeopathics work very well with strengthening the body during this time.

Vitamin D Fights Mold Allergies

Researchers found that vitamin D not only reduced the production of a protein driving the allergic response to mold, it also increased production of the proteins that promote tolerance.

This means vitamin D may not only help treat mold allergy, it may help prevent it as well.

This makes perfect sense when you consider that sufficient vitamin D is also imperative for proper functioning of your immune system, and virtually everyone who is sickened by mold has an immune system that is functioning well below par.

For asthmatics, who are among those most impacted by this particular mold, the benefits are even greater, as optimal vitamin D levels can help lessen asthma severity and symptoms in addition to reducing the risks of an allergic reaction to mold.

As I mentioned in the beginning, this mold issue is something I wanted to make those who follow Palm Beach Nutrition & Wellness away of.

Are you confused by food labeling? Thanks to the Environmental Group e-newsletter, we have a great resource to help us understand what terms like “Cage-free” or “Pasture Raised” really means.

Cage-free

The term refers to hens that are not raised in cages, but it does not necessarily mean they have access to the outdoors. There is no standard definition of “cage-free,” but it generally implies that the birds are free to perform natural behaviors. Many cage-free claims are not certified, though some cage-free eggs are certified by American Humane Certified label.

Certified Humane

Products carrying this label are certified to come from animals that were never confined in cages or crates, were not subjected to de-beaking (in the case of poultry) and were slaughtered according to specific requirements designed to minimize suffering. It does not permit the use of sub-therapeutic antibiotics or hormones. “Certified Humane Raised and Handled” and “Animal Welfare Approved” are the two leading humane certification systems, although the Food Alliance follows similar standards. “Certified Humane” does not mean animals had access to pasture, but “Animal Welfare Approved” does.

Farmed Fish

This refers to the rapidly growing industry that raises and feeds fish for human consumption in tanks or large wire pens anchored in coastal areas or other large bodies of water. Also called aquaculture, fish farming is expanding to offset the global decline in the wild fish catch. Fifty percent of seafood sold in the U.S. is now farmed. Ironically, feeding carnivorous farmed fish such as salmon requires harvesting millions of tons of smaller wild fish, such as anchovies and sardines, to produce fishmeal and fish oil. Catfish and other farmed fish are fed mostly soybeans and corn, while farmed tilapia eats a variety of algae, seaweeds and other aquatic plants. The use of open ponds and net pens or cages allows ocean water to flow freely through them. These enclosures pollute local waters with fish waste, excess feed and antibiotics and spread disease and parasites to sensitive wild marine species. The rapid growth of farmed shrimp ponds has led to deliberate destruction of thousands of coastal acres of mangrove forests that serve as fish

Free-range

In the United States, this term applies only to poultry and is regulated by the US Department of Agriculture. It indicates simply that the animals have been “allowed access to the outside.” The USDA does not specify the quality or size of the outside range nor the duration of time an animal must have access to the outside.

Grass-fed

This term technically refers only to animals fed a diet of natural grass and other forage, not grain, but it often includes other healthier farm practices not associated with industrially produced meat, such as local butchering, more range time for livestock and less crowded conditions. The three leading “grass-fed” labels, certified by the Food Alliance, the American Grassfed Association or the USDA, require that animals eat a diet exclusively of forage. Some companies that market their meat as “naturally raised” or grass-fed actually feed their animals grain for significant periods. USDA’s grass-fed marketing standard requires only that animals “must have continuous access to pasture during the growing season.” It does not necessarily mean that the animals spent their entire lives in pastures or on rangeland. Some cattle marketed as USDA grass-fed actually spend part of their lives in confined pens or feedlots.

Hormone-free/No added hormones

This means that the animals were never given hormone treatments. To boost profits, some farmers give hormones to beef cattle and sheep to speed their growth and to dairy cows to increase milk production. The USDA does not allow hormones to be used on chicken or hogs. The European Union does not allow hormones in any meat. The extensive use of hormones (see rBHG-free below) in meat and dairy may increase the risk of cancer in humans and result in higher rates of infection in animals. Products labeled “organic” cannot come from rGBH-treated cows. There is no specific hormone-free certification, though organic and grass-fed labels do not allow hormone use.

Lean/Extra Lean

These are USDA-defined terms. To qualify as “lean,” 100 grams (3.5 ounces) of beef must have fewer than 10 grams of fat, 4.5 grams or less of saturated fat, and fewer than 95 milligrams of cholesterol. To be labeled “extra lean,” 100 grams of beef must have fewer than 5 grams of fat, fewer than 2 grams of saturated fat and fewer than 95 milligrams of cholesterol.

Natural

The USDA defines a natural product as one that contains “no artificial ingredient or added color and is only minimally processed.” Processing must not fundamentally alter the product. The label must include a specific explanation such as “no artificial ingredients; minimally processed.” All fresh meat qualifies as natural. This term does not include any requirements that animals be raised in sufficient open space or that it has no added hormones or antibiotic; it is not the same as organic. The term can mislead consumers to think that the product is healthier and more humane than it is.

No nitrites/nitrates

Processed meats such as ham, bacon and hot dogs often contain nitrates, which are added to prevent the growth of harmful bacteria and to enhance color. Eating meat that has been treated with nitrates may increase the risk of cancer and other health problems. Vegetable-based nitrates (e.g., celery, salt) are a safer bet.

Organic

Food labeled organic must be third-party certified to meet USDA’s criteria. Organic foods cannot be irradiated, genetically modified or grown using synthetic fertilizers, chemicals or sewage sludge. Organic meat and poultry cannot be treated with hormones or antibiotics and must be fed only organically grown feed (with no animal byproducts). Organic meat animals must have access to the outdoors, and ruminants must have access to pasture. There are two ways to identify organic fruits and veggies: by the “100% organic” or “organic” label and by the unique Price Look-Up (PLU) code sticker. (link to Enviroblog post on this: http://www.enviroblog.org/2009/09/are-you-looking-for-the-9-when-you-produce.html Instead of a 4-digit number beginning with a “4,” organic produce has a 5-digit number that begins with a “9.”

Pasture-raised

Animals raised in a pasture can roam freely in their natural environment, where they are able to eat nutritious grasses and other plants that their bodies are adapted to digest. There is no specific pasture-raised certification, though certified organic meat must come from animals that have continuous access to pasture.

Processed meats

In addition to sodium, artificial coloring and flavor enhancers, processed meats often contain preservatives, such as nitrites, to reduce foodborne illness retard spoilage from microorganisms and rancidity from fat oxidation. Examples are: sausage, bacon, smoked ham, hot dogs, packaged lunchmeats, pepperoni and salami. Note: You won’t see the word “processed’ on the label! The American Cancer Society and the World Cancer Research Fund recommend limiting consumption of processed meats; research has linked them to colorectal, kidney and stomach cancer.

rBGH-free

These products are from animals not treated with recombinant bovine growth hormone (rBGH), also known as recombinant bovine somatotropin (rBST). rGBH is a genetically engineered hormone approved by the FDA in 1993 that when injected into cows artificially increases milk production by 10 to 15 percent. There are health concerns for both cows and humans exposed to the drug. Buying organic dairy products is another way to avoid rGBH since its use does not meet the organic criteria.

Saturated Fat

This is one of the two main types of fats that appear in foods. Unlike unsaturated fat, it has no double bonds between carbon atoms in its chemical structure, so the fatty acids are saturated with hydrogen. Fat is a necessary part of a healthy diet, but excessive saturated fat has been associated with health problems. Fats in animal-based foods are predominantly saturated. The World Health Organization (WHO), the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) urge people to limit intake of saturated fat.

Sodium nitrate/nitrite-free

This chemical preservative and color fixative is typically added to processed meats to lengthen shelf life, make the color more appealing and add a smoky flavor. Processed meats made without these additives are safer; they are likely “cured” with naturally occurring vegetable-based nitrates that are less harmful to human health.

Wild-caught/Wild Fish

The “wild fish” label indicates that the fish was spawned in the wild, lived in the wild and was caught in the wild. “Wild-caught fish” may have been spawned or lived some part of their lives in a fish farm before being returned to the wild and eventually caught. For sustainable fish, consult the Monterey Bay Aquarium’s list of the most sustainable seafood choices, or look for the Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) label.

I am sure you are like me, and we are label readers. Many shoppers want to buy the best for their family. Hopefully this will help you to understand those labels!

Have a healthy day!

Many of us may be used to hearing the term, “Grass Fed meat” – but Jordan Rubin has coined the term, Greenfed for the practices on his new ranch in Missouri. Here is an article by Jordan Rubin from this month’s issue of Extraordinary Health Magazine:

Why Greenfed?

Increased omega-3’s are just one of many reasons you should make the decision to go with greenfed beef, poultry and dairy. Studies have repeatedly and convincingly shown that greenfed livestock far outshine conventionally fed livestock.

To start, greenfed is a leaner option, with less fat and fewer calories. Greenfed meat is also higher in an important fatty acid known as conjugated linoleic acid (CLA). It is also higher in vitamin E and several B vitamins and the minerals calcium, magnesium and potassium. Eggs from pastured chickens have been shown to have higher levels of vitamins A & D with less cholesterol than eggs from factory-farmed chickens. The list goes on and on.

And even if the health benefits were exactly equal, consider this: greenfed livestock are raised in a much more humane way. They are allowed to roam versus being pent up shoulder-to-shoulder in feedlots. They are fed their natural diet, not grains that they were never meant to consume. In 2008, the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences as the University of Wisconsin at Madison reported that several farms commonly used such “feed” as candy, pasta, leftover bread from bakery manufacturers and potato chips.

Why Greenfed, you ask, Why would you consider anything else?

That was a question many pondered when the news was released last year that Garden of Life had been sold. While Jordan is still very involved with Garden of Life, his passion is and has always been healthy food – sustainable, with beyond organic standards, raw and rich in probiotics, nutrients and enzymes – exactly what he would feed his own family.

My husband and I have known Jordan and Nicki for almost 13 years now, and I have seen Garden of Life grow into the amazing company that it is today. I have followed Jordan as he started GPRx and I became one of his certified Biblical Health Coaches. My family and I have trusted Jordan and Nicki with our friendship and health. We were very excited when he mentioned to us that he had some compelling plans in the future and couldn’t wait to tell us.

Jordan Rubin has always focused his speaking engagements, training, and books on eating the right foods and recommending many great supplements. While Garden of Life made the supplements available, many people were still frustrated with not having the ability to find the foods that he had been recommending.

After over 10 years with Garden of Life, Jordan and Nicki decided to change direction and acquire an extensive ranch in Koshkonong, Missouri, along with several mountain springs in North Georgia. With these acquisitions, they birthed a new, ground breaking venture called Beyond Organic.

Soon anyone in the US will be able to buy truly organic, “green fed” meats; organic, real, raw cheeses; pure, probiotic, mountain spring water; delicious, dark probiotic chocolate; Amasai ™, a cultured dairy product similar to Kefir; probiotic flax seed oil and more!

www.kimbutler.mybeyondorganic.com

These products will not be found in health food stores or online etail stores. Thanks to Beyond Organic, healthy minded shoppers will no longer be limited to the proximity of local health food/grocery stores. Anyone can become a customer and buy these great foods and beverages or become a Mission Marketer and help grow Jordan’s mission of helping each and everyone “Change their diet, Change their life and Change their world.”

Most of us are thawing out from this winter. My husband, Danny, and I got to enjoy a taste of Spring in Georgia last weekend –our neighborhood in South Florida seems to have only two seasons – Summer and Winter. It was so lovely to see the trees in bloom!

I was pleasantly surprised NOT to have any allergic reactions! Sadly, that is not the case for many people who dread their spring allergies. With the warming temperatures and life blooming before us – the pollens seems to drive many crazy with sore throats, sneezing, coughing, head aches and watery eyes .

So, I thought I would share some ideas to help you get through this allergy season.

First, (which may be too late for some) is to take homeopathic allergy remedies in preparation for the allergy season. There are great homeopathic allergy remedies that target pollen groups, grass and weeds, or dust along with the general allergy reactions to lessen. Being prepared can make the reactions less miserable. There are also many great natural allergy supplements which contain ingredients like Butterbur , Quercetin, Stinging nettles, and Bromelain. Check with your local health food store to see what they find works best in your area.

Next, figure out what you are specifically allergic to. This way, you can select the specific remedy you need or (if possible) stay away from the source of the allergy. Monitor the allergen count in your area, to help you decide what outside activity you may wish to do that day.

One easy way to help clarify your specific allergy and remedy is to schedule yourself for my Nutritional consultation. http://palmbeachnutrition.com/sessions-rates/consultations/
Whether you are in South Florida or out of town, we can conduct the consultation and help with the allergen and remedy.

Another technique that I think should become a habit – especially during allergy season, is to flush your sinuses each morning and night. There are many products out there to help you accomplish this. The Neti Pot can be found in most health food stores, drug stores and stores like Walmart. This allows you to pour a saline solution in one nostril while tipping your head to allow the solution to rinse your sinuses and run out the other nostril.

Another great nasal cleansing protocol comes from Xlear (pronounced clear) this saline solution containing Xylitol has been found to also inhibit the growth of bacteria. This product is also available for children. Sovereign Silver also comes in a nasal spray which rinses the nasal passages with the same bacteria fighting benefits along with anti-inflammatory properties.

When we can lessen the amount of allergens in our sinuses, we can allow our immune system to take a break. Many people have shared with me how much this habit has helped with their allergies.

Finally, while many would love to open up their houses and let the fresh air in, those with allergies suffer from the “fresh” air. It would be better to invest in a good air purifier or air filter for your house. Keeping an air filter in your bedroom can ensure you are getting a good night’s sleep and prepare your body to better face the day!

It is important to boost your immune system all the time, but it is very important during allergy season. Sometimes, when your immune system is overloaded, the body will react to more “allergens”. Everyone should have a good foundation of nutritional supplements while eating a healthy diet including the right balance of fresh fruits and vegetables along with healthy meats and complex carbs.

Hope these ideas help and please don’t hesitate to contact me if you are interested in allergy help this season. I can be reached at support1@palmbeachnutrition.com or 866-915-5433.

Last Tuesday, March 22nd was Diabetes Alert Day and I wanted to share this with the members of our local Beyond Blindness Institute concerning the statistics on Diabetes. Some of the members found themselves with sight impairments due to their Diabetes and I wanted to focus on ways they could improve their health. Here is just part of what I shared:

• 79 Million Americans are in a pre-diabetic state with 26 million already diagnosed as a diabetic.
• Last year alone, nearly 2 million cases were diagnosed!
• Medical costs for diabetics are 2.3 times higher than non-diabetics
• You can take a diabetes risk test at www.diabetes.org

Diabetes is a result of problems with the pancreatic hormone insulin. Insulin controls the amount of glucose (sugar) in the blood and the rate at which the glucose is absorbed into the cells. This hyperglycemia eventually leads to damaged blood vessels, which can lead to heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, kidney failure, macular degeneration, nerve damage which leads to damage to the limbs and internal organs and kidney disease.

Getting the proper amount of sleep and exercise if very important and of course eating properly is vital to the diabetic. We discussed eating whole grains, more raw or steamed vegetables, fruits and cutting out refined white breads and sugars, artificial sweeteners and eating more fiber to help slow down the absorption of glucose in your system

The main discussion was focusing on the nutrients, so here is what we reviewed:

Essential Nutrients for a Diabetic
( which should be verified with your health practitioner)

• Alpha-lipoic Acid – for treatment of peripheral nerve damage and helps to control blood sugar levels ( follow dosage mentioned on bottle)
• Chromium Picolinate – 400 -600 mcg daily – improves insulin’s efficiency which helps lower the blood sugar levels
• Garlic – decreases and stabilizes blood sugar levels. Enhances immunity and improves circulation
• L-Carnitine – 500 mg twice daily – on an empty stomach, taken with water. This helps mobilize fat – add L-glutamine 500 mg twice daily on an empty stomach helps to reduce cravings for sugar – add taurine, 500 mg twice daily on an empty stomach – aids in the release of insulin.
• Quercetin – 100 mg 3 times daily – helps to protect the membranes of the lens of the eye from accumulations of polyols as a result of high glucose levels
• Raw Adrenal Glandular, Raw Pancreas glandular or Thyroid glandular – as directed on label helps to rebuild and nourish these organs
• Vanadium – aids insulin’s ability to move glucose into the cells ( use vanadyl sulfate form)
• Vitamin B complex – 50 mg 3 times daily plus an extra biotin can improve the metabolism of glucose with an extra 50 mg of inositol is important for circulation and for the prevention of arthrosclerosis
• Vitamin B-12 plus folic acid – Needed to prevent diabetic neuropathy
• Zinc – 50-80 mg daily ( do not exceed 100 mg daily) – since zinc deficiency has been associated with diabetes.

These nutrients combined with a good multi-vitamin can help improve the health and well being of a diabetic or pre-diabetic. Of course, everyone is unique and their nutritional needs are unique, but this a good guide that can be adjusted and/or added to as needed.

How is your New Year starting out so far? How many New Year Resolutions are you having trouble keeping already? Don’t give up on making “2011” your healthiest year ever!

Author and speaker Dr. John Maxwell shared with our church this weekend “ The greatest gap in life is between ‘knowing’ and ‘doing’ “ He also went on to share that “growth in life in not an automatic process, it must be intentional.”

Everyone wants to start out the New Year with better health. Many of you will get back to your gym or fitness club & hit that favorite salad or juice bar at lunch. It’s time for cleansing and fasting – returning to proper eating habits. One of the best ways to ensure that you are eating the right foods for you is to find out what foods your body likes or is sensitive to.

Personally, I find that having a great eating plan while consuming “healthy” foods, yet not getting the results I want, can leave me flustered and quite discouraged. Unknowingly, we may be eating foods that are antagonistic to our bodies – foods that may be healthy for some, but not for others. This can lead to frustration and consequently sabotage your progress!

How can you discover what foods your body needs and what foods you should steer away from? Through my Nutritional consultations, I have helped many people do just that!

Whether you are in town or across the world, I can provide you with a detailed list of foods, supplements and remedies that your body desires in order to get the positive results you’re aiming for this New Year.

Since today is 1-11-11, I would like to help you start out the New Year with 11% off any Nutritional Consultation and resulting product order during the month of January.
